Roles
Everyone in an institution has one role. Three are staff and work in Coach; the fourth is student, who takes a seat and practises in the student app.
What each role can do
| Role | Can do |
|---|---|
| Owner | Billing and roles, plus everything an admin can |
| Admin | Students, the join link and invites, plus everything a teacher can |
| Teacher | Cohorts, assignments and reports |
In more detail:
- Teaching — making cohorts, putting students in them, setting work and reading reports — is open to all three staff roles.
- Managing people — the join link, invites, the class-list import and removing students — is the owner's and admins'. A teacher sees the roster but cannot change it.
- Billing — checkout, seats, the card, renewing — is the owner's alone.
- Roles are the owner's alone too. Only the owner can invite an admin, or move someone between admin and teacher.
Every one of these is checked by the server on each action, not just by hiding a button, so a link someone shares with you will not open a page your role does not reach.
Changing a role
The owner changes a staff member between admin and teacher from the Staff page. That is the only change there is:
- Nobody becomes owner. The owner is whoever created the institution.
- Nobody moves between staff and student. Staff and student accounts are separate, so a student who starts teaching needs a staff invite on a different email, and a teacher who wants to practise uses a second email of their own. See Setting up an institution.
Removing someone
| Who is removing | Can remove |
|---|---|
| Owner | Anyone except themselves |
| Admin | Teachers and students |
| Teacher | Nobody |
Nobody can remove the owner — an institution without one could not be billed. An admin cannot remove another admin.
Removing a student frees their seat straight away. Their account is theirs and stays: they lose the Pro your institution was paying for, and keep everything they have done.
Staff never use a seat, so adding or removing a teacher changes nothing on the bill.
